Thriller
A thriller is a novel plot or film, with an exciting plot typically involving a crime scene. It is used to build tension and creates an adrenaline rush for the audience.
During the 1920's - 1930's Alfred Hitchcock promoted the thriller genre by creating the silent film called 'The Lodger' which was based upon the true life events of Jack the ripper. In the 1940s George Cukor created a psychological thriller called 'Gaslight' this was around the time people started making sub genres. In the 1950s Alfred Hitchcock added technicolour to his thrillers, in which he made a thriller called 'Strangers on a train' in 1951. In the 1960's Michael Powell directed the tense 'Peeping Tom' as a pyscopathic cameraman which was released just after Hickcocks film 'Psyco'. In the 1970s thriller films started to get a lot more violent, for example Hitchcocks film 'Frenzy' was rated 'R' (18 in the uk) for its explict and vicious strangulation scenes. Overall, over time Thriller films have adapted and become a lot more violent, the Thriller films around today are mainly based on crime scenes and have the intention to cause tension to the audience.
The target audience for the thriller genre has a very large age range, roughly 15-50 year olds as it is related due to the different contents thriller films have. Also due to the often violence included in the genre, the films will be of a more mature nature. Thriller films are suited to both genders, due to the suspense and tension. However stereotypically thriller films are typically aimed at males, due to the large amount of action involved, however if a relationship is involved in the plot, stereotypically it would appeal to women.
The intended goal and purpose of the genre is to build tension and suspense to the audience. To keep the audience on the edge of their seat and keep excitment through the film.
Some of the most successful films in the thriller genre are the pictures of the films opposite, they are the most talked about on the web and many have recieved extremely good reviews and very high profits.
Thriller Film Opening Analysis
The Purge
Mise en scene
During the opening scene of The Purge, the lighting is low key lighting and remains low key for the whole opening. This is to show the danger and suspense that will follow in the film. As it is dark, we often associate the darkness with bad events happening, hense why the lighting is low key and the shots are at night. This will make the audience feel wary and tense as they will expect danger and unpleasant events to take place. The majority of the characters in the opening scene are mainly wearing dark clothing, this is to show the evil and darkness within them, as the characters that are shown are killing and torturing people. The dark clothing helps to identify that they are antagonist characters in this plot. This allows the audience to feel nervous when they are shown and keeps them on the edge of their seat. Also the setting in the opening scenes
are in dark streets, small alleyways and abandoned places. These are all settings we typically associate with potential violences and negative situations, therefore adding to the films plot of murdering and torturing people and making the audience cautious. The NVC of the characters seem to be very relaxed and not uneasy, with is surprising to the audience since they have just commited a crime and been viscious to other characters, this allows the audience to form a strong dislike to the antagonist characters as they have something the audience will consider very unnatural and insensitive, therefore the audience will sympathise with the victims.
Camerwork
The camerashots used are all from cctv cameras, from the angle of the camerashots you can not always see all of the action in the frame, however by using the effect of the cctv cameras, it creates a sense of realism to the audience, which allows the tension to grow. Also as the cameras are using a high angle shot, the characters are shown from above. This shows that they are the antagonists and to begin with shows that they are going to do something bad. Also due to the majority of the filming in the opening scenes being filmed by cctv, the audience are able to see the date and time in which the violent attack took place, allowing the audience to connect with the victims and to feel sorry for them.
Editing
The scene starts off with a black background and then skips to the first cctv shot of violence. From that a series of different violent clips are played. The editing ranges from just playing one scene to the next with no editing techniques to sometimes using a jumping technique which makes the clip skip slightly. This, although done on purpose, is ment to make the scene look unprofessional (which fits with the use of cctv) so it appears realistic to the audience. This keeps the audience on the edge of their seat as the tension of what is going to happen next increases due to the sympathy and anxiety they feel for the victim in the film.
Text
The opening credits to The Purge starts the institutional conventions with the name of the production company, "Univeral Pictures" appearing on a black screen. It then leads onto "A PLATINUM DUNES/BLUMHOUSE/WHY NOT production". From that, the first camerashot is shown, and the titles of the actors/actresses in the film are slowly shown one after the other. After the main characters names have been displayed, the crew involved in the film are the next titles added, for example: "Casting by Lisa Field". The opening credits then end with the writer and director "James Demonaco". The credits are in roughly a size 16, clear enough to see but small enough they dont take up too much space and blocking the content of the filming. The text is the colour white and has been put in bold. This is so the text stands out through the low key lighting of the extracts in the film. The white text connotes goodness, however atypical of the thriller genre, it gives the audience a sense of comfort from the viscious attacks being shown. This allows the audience to feel that there may be some good in the film and keeps them intrigued to continue watching. From what i have learnt from these opening credits, i now know that when i make my thriller film opening, i will firstly start with the production companys name, then the actors and then the crew. I will apply this to my film to make the opening scene look professional and successful.
Sound
The sound techniques chosen in The Purge's opening scene, is very atypical of a stereotypical thriller opening. The non digetic sound of the backing track is in a minor key and creates a very simple and almost relaxed atmosphere about it. This contradicts the contents of the film being played at the same time, as the film is of a violent nature which makes the audience angry and furious, feelings which are not brought across by the minor key, however the minor key does creates a negative and sad effect on the audience, making them emphasis with the victims due to the emotions they feel from the sound effects. The non digetic sound in the opening scene of The Purge, starts off fairly quiet, this connotes a sad realism to the audience of the contents of violence and murders they are being shown, however towards the end of the clip, the non digetic sound increases in volume, showing the anger and frustration of the audience is growing with the more violent attacks they see. Futhermore, when the clip reachers around 1.18, the sound begins to fall in volume, this has been done to calm the audience down before going into the first scene of the film. From this i have learnt, that when editing sound into my thriller film opening, i must be aware to match the sound effects with the feelings the audience will be experiencing at that specific time. I feel that if i follow this, my film opening will be successful.
Events, Themes, Characters
The main characters shown in the opening scene of The Purge are all antagonist characters, the target audience will gain a dislike towards these characters as they are hurting other people, which makes the audience sympthasise with the victims. Due to the violence shown within these characters, the film has a certification of 15. The events that take place, during this specific scene, are very stereotypical events of a thriller. These are, the murders and very violent attacks. The events during the opening, were explicit as the events that were happening were obvious in their content and there was nothing left for implication. The theme showed in the opening scene has a variation of concepts, i.e. revenge, jealousy, obsession, hunger for power etc. This is shown through the murders and violence shown.
Psycho 1960
Mise en Scene
In the opening scene of Psyco, low key lighting has been used throughout. The use of a black screen and dark grey lines connotes enigma and danger, which would make the audience anxious and tense.
Camerawork
There is very little camerawork in the opening scene of Physco as the majority of it has to do with editing. However there is one establishing shot shown at the end of the clip of the city. This connotes the importance and power of the city and makes the audience understand where the film is set and that it is set there for a specific reason.
Editing
Editing has made this opening scene. The main editing technique that has been included is the use of the grey lines moving. The use of the grey lines sliding into place often take a couple of attempts to eventually fit together. This connotes confusion, a stereotypical effect within a thriller film. This has been used to make the audience feel anxious and wary as they are infact confused themselves. Fast paced editing has been used, the fast paced editing adds to the effect of confusion as the lines seem very rushed in which shows their disorintation, therefore making the audience on edge as they will not fully understand what is happening. A feeling stereotypical of the thriller genre.
Text
The instutional conventions of Psycho's opening scene, start with the name of the production company "Paramount". After the production company, Alfred Hitchcock's name appears on sceen, thenn the name of the film "Psycho" which is followed by the actors, then the information that it was based upon a novel, then the crew and finally finished once again with Alfred Hitchcock's name. The reason Alfred's name has been mentioned twice in the credits, is that by finishing the credits with his name, it shows his importance to the film and as it is the last name the audience will see, it becomes rememberable. The text is in the colour white, has a bold print and is in capital letters. This is so the text can stand out against the dark baackground. Also another connotation within the text, is that when the title of the film appears "Psycho". The wording, around 20 seconds in, becomes disorintated. This creates an unnatural feel to the scene, which makes the audience fel anxious.
Sound
The non digetic sound in the opening scene of 'Psycho' is in a major key, has a fast tempo and is relatively loud in volume. This creates an intense and dramatic atmosphere in the scene, which makes the audience feel anxious and tense about the events which may occur. The theme of the soundtrack sounds as if someone was approachiing another person (in a negative situation) and the faster the music got, the closer they got to catching them. This makes the audience feel wary as the increase of the non digetic sound connotes something significant is about to happen. Also, to end the opening scene, the non digetic sound, gets extremely loud and is in a high pitch. It then ends with one "Dun" like sound. This may connote that the chase is over and they person has been caught. Allowing the audience to feel relief. From this i have learnt, that when creating my thriller opening, that i should consider the fact that sound is able to tell a story to the audience and create tension and anxiety, with no acting needing to take plce. And that sound is able to complete what is needed by the thriller genre, if done correctly.
