What is Lip-syncing?

Lip syncing in music is when a singer/performer moves their lips in synchronization with pre recorded music. It is typically used by singers when performing live in order to keep their voice sounding as their audience expects it to be. Some people consider lip-syncing dishonest howevers others suggest that it is sometimes necessary in the music industry. However lip-syncing is also used during the making of music videos, the singer/ performer will lip-sync along to their track while filming the music video. The soundtrack will then be added to the music video later on in editing.

Ashlee Simpson saturday night live performance in 2009

Ashlee's first song, "Pieces of Me", was performed as planned. However, when she began her second song, "Autobiography", the vocals for the song "Pieces of Me" were heard and as Ashlee did not have her microphone near her mouth, it was clear that she had planned to lip-sync. Ashlee then started to dance awkwardly and left the stage. Due to this being consider dishonest by a lot of Ashlee's fans her career quickly started going downhill.
