Vance Joy - First Time

Vance Joy's 'First Time' was published on the 4th August 2014 and is taken from his debut album 'Dream your life away'. Vance's genre is Indie pop and Indie folk. Both Genres in which our chosen artits performs. Therefore I decided to analyse this video to see whether Vance's video displays the typical genre conventions of the Indie pop/folk genre. The first six seonds of the music video show an establishing shot and zoom in of an apartment window with who we presume

to be the performer standind behind it. High key lighting has been used to show the bright sky to suggest the building is high up and far away. This shot, along with the ambient sound of the sea breeze connotes a sense of isolation and lonliness. This creates the atmosphere for the narrative of the music video as it reflects the story being told. From 8 - 16 seconds in Vance Joy is seen wearing a plain white t-shirt and red checked shirt along with jeans by a mid shot. The use of casual clothing allows Vance to appeal relatable to his audience, therefore using personal identitiy from the uses and gratification theory. Durng this mid shot, the plain setting showing only a bed and wood background suggests the simplicity of the song while the same shot Vance is looking out the window singing. This could connote him reflecting on his own personal experiences and relating his lyrics to them. Once again allowing the audience to feel that Vance is relatable and ordinary however also see him as extraordinary by his ability to perform, relating to Richard Dyer's Star theory. From this shot a straight cut is used to show a cross cut between the main male and female character with the use of tracking to show their movements. At around 21 seconds a medium close up has been used to show the main males head in his hands. This suggests a sense of disbelief and sets the narrative in that their may be a problem. A straight cut then shows a mid shot of the female charcter at around 23 seconds with her holding her arm for comfort. This fits with the lyrics as when this is played the lyrics say "Held on tight". This connotes that she is struggling and that the song lyrics relate to the narrative and the story being told. At 39 seconds into the music video, the same setting has been used as Vance performing in the second shot of the video. This could suggest that what we as the audience see in this room could be from the point of view of Vance. A high angle and Canted angle shot shows a vase with broken rose petals falling off of it. The vase is a clear colour where the rose petals are white, these neutral colours suggest innocence and how it has been broken, especially as roses are a symbol of love so with them falling off and dying it suggests heartbreak. From 40 seconds - 1 minute 14 seconds fast paced editing of shot reverse shot has been used to show Vance performing and the couple being together. This could have been used to connote Vance's relationship with the narrative he is telling in his music videos narrative. The shot reverse shot connotes Vance's reflection on his connection with the narrative. From 1.50 - 2.20 a series of straight cuts have been used to show the couple on their own against a plain background, in sync these shots vary between these 30 seconds against straight cuts of the couple in the shower with a dark purle and red filter. This filter connotes the lust and passion the couple used to have and with the straight cuts of the close ups with the plain background suggests the struggle they are in now and that they are relfecting on what they used to have. At 2.43 an establishing shot of a tidy workplace is shown, this same shot is shown at 2.56 however the use of wind messes up the tidyness of the workplace. This has been used as a metaphor and connotes the disruption and confusion of the couple within the narrative. At 3.04 - 3.10 at purple background with a black siloette is shown which connotes the confusion and lust of the narrative in that they are struggling but still in love. From this a cross cut shows the couple kissing which once again reflects the passion the have. The last shot of the music video shows Vance looking down from the apartment he is in, this connotes that Vance has possible experienced the narrative told by the other characters and that he relates his lyrics to the story told. The shot shows the audience that he is reflecting on past experiences.
