Genre Conventions In music videos

Pop

The Pop genre is probably seen as one of the most successful and listened to genres within the music industry currently. Music videos within the genre are reaching records as being some of the most viewed videos of 2015. Typically conventions that will be seen within a Pop music video are: 

  • Typically a narrative / performance based video

  • Mise en scene - Bright colours / High key lighting / Bright costumes & Make up

  • Editing - Fast paced / Filters / special effects

  • Camerawork - Close ups of artist / Long shots of performance

 

Rock

The Rock genre is seen to have a much different audience than the pop genre. It has produced many successful music videos. These videos have typical genre conventons to Rock such as: 

  • Typically a performance / concept based video

  • Mise en scene - Low key lighting / Casual clothing / Concert based  or open setting

  • Editing - Fast paced / sometimes montage / straight cuts 

  • Camerawork - Long shots of band/ artist perfoming 

  • Igonography is very typical

 

Indie

The Indie genre has become quite popular within the charts with many artists reaching number one. The genre typically produces slow and acoustic type music. However the typical genre conventions that are shown in a indie music video are:

  • Live performance / narrative

  • Mise en scene - setting typically outside or adventourous

  • Editing - Slow paced editing / Typically filter used (black and white or sepia)

  • Camerawork - Close ups / Tracking and panning of artist

  • Sound - Occasionally dialogue will be shown at the beginning of the video   

 

Hip-hop

Hip-hop has a different sound to pop and indie and therfore has different music videos, some of the typical genre conventions that are in hip-hop videos are:

  • Performance / concept

  • Mise en scene - low key lighting / sterotypical props to hip hop stereotype 

  • Editing - Fast paced

  • Camerawork - low angle shots / close ups
