Gabrielle Aplin - Home
Gabrielle Aplin released her music video for 'Home' on the 9th June 2013. The genre of Gabrielles music is Indie Pop and her music video shows many of the typical conventions for indie pop music videos. The first 45 seconds of the music video shows Gabrille getting mugged and her car stolen. The camera angles mainly show Gabrielle with the majority of mid close ups being used to show the NVC of Gabrille as frantic and upset. A dialogue is also playing between the people who mug Gabrille and Gabrielle herself. She is heard shouting "Please! No!" a few times
while the other man in the long shot is seen saying "Have fun walking girl". Which is followed by a long shot of Gabrielle running and holding her hands on her head in disbelief. This represents her struggle and her need to pull through. The first 45 seconds sets the story for the narrative behind the music video. Editing has also been used to create a background from the smoke produced from the car, this fills the screen and typography of the word 'HOME' appears in the centre of the screen in a small white font. Although the text is simple and small, it stands out in front of the dusty background allowing the audience to become familiar with the title of the song. The following shot is a mid close up of Gabrielle Aplin, the mid close up allows the audience to see the NVC of her facial expressions. She appears stressed yet determined to keep going. The following shots are establishing shots of extreme settings, such as a dessert with an abandoned vechile in it and a lake with views of mountains. While these establishing shots are being shown, the lyrics of the song say "Im a phoneix in the water, a fish thats learnt to fly". This relates to how out of place Gabrille is, which is reflected through the settings she is being shot in. At 1.53 a mid shot of Gabrielle has been used while in a motel. The use of a motel as the setting shows the isolation that Gabrille is experiencing also the mid shot shows that she is wearing little make up and casual clothing. This represents her as real and could possibly allow the audience to find personal identity with being able to relate and relect themselves in what Gabrille is experiencing. The shot also shows her singing which represents her talent and passion for singing even when she is going through a rough time. At around 2 minutes in a long shot shows Gabrielle resting her head on a pillow while in the motel, this is played along with the lyric "rest your head" this shows that Gabrielle is connected to the song and that her performance represents her lyrics. At around 3.07, a medium close up shows Gabrielle recieving a guitar after swapping her watch to get it. This shot allows the audience to see her passion for music and her ability to play the instrument. This displays her talent and artistic skill which allows the audience diversion into her performance. This is also shown at 3.26 when a mid shot shows Gabrielle busking on a bench, low key lighting has been used which suggests that it is night time, this shows determinatiion and passion for her music as she is always performing whenever she gets the chance. Towards the end of the music video, at around 3.42, Gabrielle is finally performing to an audience, the establishing and long shot show the bar in which Gabrielle is singing to while sitting on a pool table. The use of the establishing shot shows the audience that although she is not performing to a large range of people she is still getting to performing and has advanced from where she was at the beginning of the narrative. However fast paced editing has been used with straight cuts between shots of Gabrielle singing and shots of her running in the desert, the fast paced editing creates a tense atmosphere and mood due to the back and fourth of the shots however projects the message that in the end you will get to where you want if you work hard enough. This message is projected through the music video with the narrative being told.
