Magazine Advert Analysis

Ellie Goulding - Lights

4/11/15

 Lana del ray -

Born to die

5/11/15

This magazine advert is advertising Lana Del Rey's album born to die. The line of vision is very visible in this magazine advert. The line of vision allows us to see Lana's name first, this therefore is considered the most important part of the advert that the audience is wanted to remember, followed by Lana's face sothe audience can recognise her as the star and then the title of the album. A mid shot has been used of Lana which shows the upper half of her body. She is wearing a white shirt which connotes purity and innocence however the white and modest shirt also connotes with the natural and pure background of a clear blue sky. The setting suggests a peaceful and natural atmosphere, this however challenges the title of the album 'Born to Die' which could be considered quite intimidating. However, the contrast of the peaceful background along with the high key lighting creates a welcoming advert to the audience. The direct address seen by Lana in the mid shot allows the audience to feel connected to the star even though she is really unapproachable (Dyer present yet absent theory). Which creates personal relationships for the viewer (uses and gratification theory. The colour of the typography shows continuity in this advert as the white writing is placed on a blue background and the blue writing is placed on a white background. This has been done to allow the sans serif text to be bold and eye catching to the viewer yet to also symbolise the peaceful message behind Lana's music.

Marina & the diamonds - The family Jewels

7/11/15

Mumford & Sons - Sigh no more

9/11/15

Coldplay -

X & Y

Coldplay's album X&Y is advertised in this magazine by showing the band, album cover and album release date. At the top of the magazine advert the band are sat along side each other wearing black clothing. The black clothing suggests mystery and could have been used to interest and intrigue the audience. Behind the band are a series of black wires. The black wires appear to be for band equipment and microphones. This connotes the bands love and commitment to music. The long shot of the band also shows direct address to audience as all members of the band are looking directly at the camera. This allows the audience to feel close to the band however it also shows Dyers theory that a performer can be close yet far from the audience. The high key lighting used at the top of the advert allows the artists to stand out and be recognised as the performers that made the album. Below the long shot of the performers a black background allows for the typography in the right bottom corner to stand out as it is in a white font. The name of the performer and album name is positioned above the release date of the album. Although both texts are in the same font and are the same size, something that differs to other magazine adverts. The name of the performer and the album name are made bold. This allows them to be more noticable and creates more of an impact on the audience, in order for them to remember the artists brand. Also different to other magazine adverts i have analysed, this magazine advert displays the album cover in the left bottom corner. This allows the audience to know what the album they are promoting looks like and creates coninuity between the magazine advert and the albums digipak.

The Killers -

Day & Age

13/11/15

15/11/15

The Killers Day and Age album is advertised in this magazine advert through creative designs rather than showing the band/performer. The background design of the advert shows a range of small dots in different colours in order to create scenery. This effect has most likey been created through editing and reflects the bands creativity and uniqueness. The scenery is made to loo like a field / outside area. The use of the setting choice connotes with the genre conventions of indie-pop music as typically indie-pop is associated with nature and seasonal settings. The typography of the artists name and the name of the album are positioned in the middle of the advert. A white large font is used for the artists name, using white connotes the band positively and allows for the negative connotations of 'Killers' to be forgotten. Using black for the album name connotes a sense of mystery and represents that the music may contain some negative connotations, however it also allows for the name of the album to stand out against the white dots allowing the typography to capture the audiences attention and draw them in. Positioned towards the bottom of the advert promotional language is used to promote the band, this text is also in white allowing it to stand out and catch the audiences attention. No camerawork or lighting has been used for this magazine advert due to it being produced through editing, this makes it very different to the other magazine adverts i have analysed however allows the band to be represented as creative and different.

Marina & the diamonds -

Homewrecker

18/11/15

This magazine advert for Marina and the diamonds is fairly simple in comparison to other magazine adverts i have analysed. A mid shot has been used of the artist which shows her upper body and face. High key lighting has been used on the artists face and shows her looking directly to the audience. Direct address from the performer allows a relationship to be formed between the performer and the audience. The direct address along with dark eye make up against her pale skin from the high key lighting allows the artist to look fairly intimidating, this connotes power and shows her as successful. The background shows 3 blocked colours of orange, blue and green, as these are fairly dark colours it allows for the performer to stand out and allow the focus to be on her. On the right side of the performers face a small black heart has been drawn on her cheek. This has become a trademark for the performer and therefore by displaying it on the magazine advert that is promoting her album she is presenting her brand identity. The typography for the magazine advert is also similar to other adverts i have analsyed as the performers name is positioned at the top of the advert, due to line of vision this makes the performers name the first thing the audience will notice, allowing for brand recognition. At the bottom of the advert the title of the album 'Homewrecker' is displayed in the same font as the artists name, the text is capitalised nd in a white font. The white font challenges the negative connotations of the word homewrecker and connotes hope instead.
