Ellie Goulding - How long will I love you
Ellie Goulding released the music video for 'How long will I love you' on the 28th October 2013. The first shot of the music video is a close up of the piano in which Ellie is playing. This shot shows Ellie's talent of being able to play the piano and shows her artistic skills to the audience. The following shot is an establishing shot of the apartment / bedroom is playing music in. The props around consist of a slogan poster on the door and clothes hanging on the back of a chair. These props connote the fact that Ellie is young along with the next shot which shows
the bright colours around the apartment. These bright colours connote Ellie's youthfulness which relates to Richard Dyer's star theory that stars must be both ordinary and extraordinary as her apartment is typical for someone of her age yet her extraordinary image is portrayed through her performane during the video. The typology of this music video is a narrative about two people in love doing crazy things together. The love within the narrative is first shown at around 27 seconds when a close up of Ellie is used to show her NVC of her facial expression as she smirks when she sees the man in the video, suggesting that seeing him makes her happy. At around 37 seconds the focus is of Ellie and her boyfriend driving around in a car. The use of the car could connote their journey as a couple together. After this shot a straight cut has been used to show a mid shot of Ellie singing into a microphone while playing her guitar against a New York back drop. The filter of the shot has changed to black and white. Editing the filter to black and white connotes that this scene is not attached to the narrative story however creates a romantic atmosphere as typically black and white connotes a class and love. This along with the New York background connotes romance and depth. Using the mid shot t show Ellie perfoming shows her passion for both music and love as she is shown closing her eyes while singing which connotes emotion however concentrates on playing her guitar which shows her love for performing well. These are all typical genre convention of a indie-pop genre as filters and a performance heavily focused on the artist are used in the majority of indie-pop music videos, to create an atmosphere and to advertise the performer and their talents. At 1.27 blocking has been used by the items on the washing line with Ellie approaching in the background to suggest that Ellie is going to do something with them. The prop of the 'superman' underwear once again shows Ellie's youthfulness and when tracking is used to follow Ellie running is connotes her immaturity when it comes to love as by stealing the items follows the videos narrative of doing crazy things because of love. However this allows a range of people to be able to relate to Ellie as her youthfulness will appeal to many audiences. The final shot of the music video consists of a shot reverse shot of Ellie and her boyfriend in their car and them cuts to a shot of an elderly couple cuddling and then back to a close up and two shot of Ellie and her boyfriend once again. During this shot Ellie and her boyfriend look at each other and although no dialogue is said through thr nvc of their facial expression and the lyrics " How long will i love you, as long as stars above you" connotes that they see similarities in themselves and the elderly couple and hope to be as in love with each other when they are their age. This concludes the narrative of the video and the story of 'How long will I love you' as she will always love him.
